Since I grew up long after that time, hearing the expression used to make me wonder “what’s so great about sliced bread?” One day my grandmother visited and made a loaf of fresh bread to show me the difference between the real deal and the store brand white stuff that my mom bought. The contrast was clear! Fresh baked bread tasted so much better. But slicing was a hassle and my pre-teen hands did an uneven job of it. So, even though I loved the taste of fresh bread, I followed my mom’s example and bought sliced when I started shopping for myself.
Now that I’ve learned a few things about the potential adverse side effects of additives, preservatives, and white processed flour, I know the advantages of baking my own bread. But I’m all about quick and easy in the kitchen, so I appreciate how easy it can be to get fresh breads at stores like Whole Foods and the many supermarket chains that have on-site bakeries making fresh and sliced breads every day. Most supermarkets also have good gluten-free sections, which include gluten-free breads for those with such sensitivities. And even small cities usually have specialty or bread stores that use all kinds of different grains and make preservative-free breads. So sliced bread is even greater today being quick, easy, and healthy.
