Water Based Clear Coat Over Oil Stain

Water Based Clear Coat Over Oil Stain

Greg, you can apply a water based topcoat over an oil based stain without. topcoat, such as General Finishes Original Seal-a-Cell CLEAR.
Minwax® Polycrylic® Protective Finish is a crystal clear, fast-drying protective topcoat for use over bare wood, oil– and waterbased stains, paint and wallpaper.
I'm spraying waterbased finishes in my basement workshop and was wondering what others experiences are with spraying waterbased .
In this video, Tom Monahan of General Finishes explains how you can use oil based and water based.
Water based over oil stain is fine—but poly is not the best finish, IMHO.. .. My mother favored dark walnut stain and thick coats of minwax clear glossy poly.
Higher in VOCs than waterbased finishes and therefore not available in all parts of the country.. To keep a partially filled can of oil-based poly from skinning over, cover the finish with this. Stains and protects bare wood with each coat.
Because of their oil content, oil/ varnish mixes also need to dry overnight.. . Waterbased finishes release fewer odors than oil-based varnish or lacquer, but. For deep scratches—especially on stained wood—strip and refinish the surface.
